2025 Photos & News Diary

NOVEMBER 2025

November 7th - This afternoon we bowled against Adur Indoor BC which is usually our most difficult fixture of the winter season because most if not all of their team bowl Indoors throughout the year. Well done to all of our team and we fought hard to keep the scores as close as possible.

We lost the match 51 - 81 but Marion Hoggen, Ann Stainsby, Mike Harding, and Skip Roy Webb did very well to win their rink 19 - 15 against the Adur Captain's four.

November 5th - A tough but enjoyable Indoor bowling match for us this aftenoon playing against Rottingdean BC at Denton Island IBC.

Rottingdean play fairly regularly at Denton during the winter months and they were clearly much more familiar with the green than we are . They won the match 87 - 48 and they won on 3 of the 4 rinks played today.

Congratulations to Jim Ede and Wayne Brown who both made their Indoor Bowling match debuts for Shoreham today. Jim and Wayne both put in terrific performances and played together in our winning rink alongside Malcolm Beer and Dave Hoggen.

OCTOBER 2025

October 31st - A great result for us this afternoon bowling against Robin's Reliants at Adur IBC. At the half time tea break, we were losing by quite a few shots but we came back well in the second half to win the match 60 - 55…..Well done to all who played today.

Our winning rinks were Malcolm Beer, Lynda Lainchbury, Mike Harding and Skip Bob Page who were our top rink and our other winners were Jenny Hughes, Ron Lainchbury, Ivan Parnell and Skip Dave Hoggen. Our drawn rink who brought home today’s victory for us were Mo Barnes, Steve Harris, Ian Stainsby and Skip Ann Stainsby.

Congratulations also to Anne Witney who made her match debut for Shoreham BC today.

October 24th - Another close and exciting indoor friendly match this afternoon playing at Adur IBC against our friends from Worthing IBC. Last week we beat Southwick by two shots on the overall score and today we were beaten by two shots with a final score of 63 - 65.

David Cornwell, Sarah Fowle, Marion Hoggen and Skip Dave Hoggen bowled in our winning rink this afternoon with a score of 24 - 11 in their favour.

October 17th - We played our first match of the 25/26 Indoor Bowling season this afternoon against Southwick BC.

It was a very friendly and exciting match and it was great to have Phil Hillsden making his debut for Shoreham BC. We won the match by 2 shots with a final score of 68 - 66.

Thank you to everybody who made themselves available for today's match and well done to those of you who played including Ian Stainsby, Ann Stainsby, Brian Bulmer and Skip Dave Hoggen who won their rink with a score of 25 - 9.

October 10th - An enjoyable evening today at the Sussex Yacht Club in Shoreham for our 2025 Club Competitions Presentation Evening with a nice meal, subsidised by the club and good live entertainment.

Congratulations to all of our competition winners and runners up and many thanks to all of our members and their partners and friends who were able to attend the event.

October 4th -  The final match of our outdoor season took place today.  On a blustery day we played a friendly match away at Portslade.

In difficult conditions, there was some great bowling from both teams and although we lost the match 78 - 50 we gave them a good game on their artificial green.

October 3rd - We only have one more outdoor friendly match to play, which is tomorrow at Portslade and then our 2025 outdoor season draws to a close. It all seems to have passed by very quickly and fortunately we were generally been blessed with some lovely weather this summer.

In preparation for our winter indoor season, we played a roll up at Adur Indoor Bowling Club this afternoon. It was great to see some of our newer bowlers such as Sarah and Steve adapting very well to the much faster indoor green on what was a very enjoyable session filled with fun, laughter and plenty of friendly banter today.

SEPTEMBER 2025

September 23rd - The final Brodie League fixture of this season was played this afternoon between Marine Gardens and Maltravers with Marine Gardens winning 8 - 2.

Southwick won the league again despite us beating them home and away again! Runners up in a league which consisted of ten bowling clubs this season is still a great achievement for Shoreham. BC.👏

Many thanks and well done to all of our members who played in this league this season and to everybody who came along to support us in the matches. Hopefully next season we can finish one place higher than we did this season!

September 20th - Congratulations to Ivan Parnell who captained Shoreham BC for the first time today in Alan's absence for the friendly match away at Preston BC.  Captain Ivan's match report is as follows:

Thanks to the Preston ten. We were given a good game. Their green had been hollow  tined, but it still bowled really well.  We lost on two and won on one rink. A special thanks to Babara Velardo who was the lonely lady in our team and Ron Lainchbury who was in our winning rink.

September 19th - Congratulations to today's Friar Tuck Competition  winners. Ivan Parnell and Brian Bulmer and to the runners up, Trevor Langrish and Wayne Brown.  Well played also Suzie Warley who was the top scorer in the competition.

Brian has had a particularly great week as just a week ago, he won the Shoreham Masters Competition.

September 17th - Unfortunately our last three friendly matches were all cancelled due to heavy rain so it was nice to be able to play our friendly match away at Peacehaven today, even though the weather was still very windy and quite damp.

We had a great result at a club we always enjoy visiting, winning on 3 rinks, losing on the other 2 and the overall score was an 82 - 64 victory for us.

Many thanks as always to the lovely members of Peacehaven for their wonderful hospitality and their green was excellent considering the recent bad weather we have had.

September 12th

Congratulations to Brian Bulmer who won our annual Shoreham Masters competition today in difficult wet and windy weather conditions.  Well done also to Richard Pavitt who was the runner up in the competition.

Thank you to John McMurran for all his work in organising the day and to Bob Page who umpired the competition.

September 9th -

As Shoreham BC were the Brighton & Hove District Ladies League champions in 2024, we were honoured to host the Presentation Day today for the 2025 Ladies League which was won by Southwick Park with Portslade being the runners-up.

32 Ladies came along from Southwick BC,  Rottingdean BC,  Woodingdean BC,  Portslade BC and The  Drive BC but unfortunately Southwick Park BC were unable to attend the event.

The Ladies from the visiting clubs were split into two group and Jane Bowen ran a smaller version of our 'Friar Tuck' competition called the 'Maid Marion!' Basically the format consists of a target painted onto our green and the participants aim at the target from a corner of the green and receive points if their bowls land within the target.  All of the Ladles who played in the competition enjoyed the format and many thanks to our Competitions Secretary John McMurran for setting the target up on our green.

This was followed by a buffet and a raffle before the runners-up shield was presented to Portslade BC.  We will present the winners shield to Southwick Park when we next see them.

Overall today's event was a resounding success and a great day was had by all in this afternoon's sunshine. 🌞

September 8th - It was a lovely warm afternoon as we played our final Brodie League match of the season today away at Worthing Bowls Club who are based at Beach House Park.  This is the club where our Brodie Captain Marion Hoggen, together with  her other half Dave were members for a couple of  years prior to joining Shoreham.
We won on 3 of the 4 rinks this afternon with a shot count of Shoreham BC 65 - Worthing BC 59. This gives us 8 of the 10 points available  and takes us back to the top of the league, 7 points ahead of Southwick but they still still have 2 matches to play.
Today's result guarantees us at least 2nd place out of 10 teams and  whatever happens in Southwick's last 2 matches, we have had another great season in the Brodie League and won 14 of the 18 matches we played.

September 7th -

A fabulous afternoon today for Marion Hoggen, Bridget Pavitt, Suzie Warley and Skip Brenda Page who won the 2025 Gladys Rowland Competition Final at Burgess Hill.

Our same 'Fab Four' were runners up in this competition last season and for the majority of their matches in both seasons, they had to fight back from behind to beat their opponents.

Today's match was very different however as our four were 16 - 8 in front after 12 ends and seemed to be in total control of the match. Huge credit to their opponents from the Isle of Thorns BC who staged a remarkable comeback and with one end left, Isle of Thorns had taken an 18 - 16 lead.

The drama didn't end there however. On the final end, we were 3 shots down with only Brenda left to bowl. With her first bowl, she played a brilliant shot to turn around 3 down to 1 up. With her second bowl, Brenda played another great shot to put us 2 up and into a potentially match winning position. Credit again to Brenda's opposing Skip who with her final bowl took out one of our two shots which meant the score was 18 - 18 and an extra end was required to decide the result.

Following the dramatic 18th end, momentum had clearly shifted in our direction and we picked up a four on the extra end to win the competition and the trophy for Shoreham BC.

Warm congratulations to our 'Fab Four' and everybody at our club is very proud of Marion's, Bridget's, Suzie's and Brenda's wonderful achievement.

Apologies to all for the 5 minute delay in announcing the final result as commentator Dave H most unprofessionally decided to join in with all the post match hugs and kissing with the ladies before announcing the result!

September 6th - Beautiful sunny weather this afternoon away at Adastra BC for our friendly match and great hospitality provided by our hosts. The match format was five Triples and we drew on one of them but were beaten on the other four.

Despite our defeat, we all had a lovely afternoon as Adastra have always been a very friendly club and we thank them all for making us feel so welcome.

September 4th - Our friendly and Ladies League matches scheduled for earlier this week were both cancelled due to heavy rain.

Today we played our penultimate Brodie League match away at Maltravers and we went into the match with optimism having beaten  them 10 - Nil at home recently.  Sadly for us, opponents extracted revenge for their earlier defeat by beating us 8 - 2 and almost certainly ending our chances of winning the league this season.  Maltravers won on three rinks and we won on the other rink and the total shot count was Shoreham 55 Maltravers 79.

Many thanks to Club Secretary Jane and Club Captain Alan for travelling over to Littlehampton to support us today and our final fixture in the Brodie League will be played away at Worthing BC on Monday 8th September.

AUGUST 2025

Many thanks to our Competitions Secretary John McMurran for organising this year's competitions and to Ivan Parnell and Dave Page for preparing our green for today.  Thanks also to Bob Page for umpiring and to all of our Markers and Scoreboard Operators.

Last but not least, thank you to all of our members and friends who came along to watch today's finals, the atmosphere you created was wonderful.

August 29th - Today we played our penultimate Ladies League match away at Rottingdean.  Unfortunately we lost on both rinks with a shot count of Shoreham 22 - Rottingdean 32, so Rottingdean receive all 6 points available.  Sadly, this result drops us the bottom of the League with our final match due to be played at home against Woodingdean next Tuesday at 10.30am.

August 26th -

This afternoon we played our last home Brodie League fixture of the season against Lancing BC.  We won on two rinks, drew on one rink and were beaten on the other rink. The total shot count was Shoreham 82 - Lancing 65 so this gives Shoreham 7 points and Lancing 3 points.
Today's victory lifts us back up to the top of the League but we are only 2 points ahead of Southwick who have a game in hand on us.

We have two remaining away fixtures to play in this season's league, at Maltravers on 4th September and at Worthing on 8th September.

August 23rd -

Warm congratulations to Marion Hoggen, Bridget Pavitt, Suzie Warley and Skip Brenda Page who today reached the final of the Gladys Rowland competition for the second year in a row.

This morning’s semi-final against Adastra was played on neutral territory at Burgess Hill. The early stages of the match were tight but Adastra were getting the better of us and we were 5 - 2 down after six ends. We picked up one shot on the seventh end followed by an excellent six shots on the eighth end and this put us into the lead for the first time with a score of 9 - 5.

Bolstered by our six, we then took complete control of the match and were 18 - 7 up after the fourteenth end. Adastra managed to stage a mini-comeback in the last four ends but by that stage, we were too far ahead of them and the final score was 20 - 14 in our favour.

Considering that in excess of sixty teams entered this year's competition, this is a great achievement for our ladies and for our club and the final will be played At Burgess Hill on 7th September.

August 21st - Earlier this week we recorded a great 8 - 2 victory in the Hove League at home against Hove and Kingsway BC.  They took their revenge on us at Hove this afternoon by beating us 8 - 2!

Alan Hesselden and Richard Tourle were involved in a brilliant game for us.....After 17 ends, they were all square against their opponents and we scored one shot on the last end to win the 16 - 15 on that rink and secure our two points.

August 20th - A  nice afternoon at Saltdean for today's friendly match.  The weather when we arrived was cloudy, windy and chilly but thankfully, the sun came out soon after the match commenced and we all enjoyed the match and the hospitality provided by our hosts.

We lost the match 72 - 74 but we all had a great day out.

August 19th - This afternoon we played at home against Maltravers from Littlehampton in the Brodie League. We had a great result, winnning on all four rinks with an overall score of 87 - 42 so we took all ten points available from the match.

Huge thanks to Richard Tourle and Alan Hesselden who came in for us as very late replacements and played very well.

August 18th - We played at Home against Hove & Kingsway in the Hove League and we came out on top in two of the three rinks. We won 54 - 45 on the overall score, so 8 points to Shoreham and 2 points to Hove & Kingsway.

August 17th

Beautiful weather this afternoon for our Sunday Fun Day with the ladies playing a triples match against the men. The match was played across four rinks and the ladies team also included Ruth Rogers, Helen Brand, Sue Wall, and Lyn Eade from Adur Indoor BC and Sue Willard from Southwick BC.

Please see below for post match comments from today’s two captains;

Brenda Page - “A big thank you to all for this afternoon’s FUN day which was such a laugh and loved by all I hope . Massive thanks to Suzie for preparing the cream tea and to Jane for all her help. Thanks also to Dave P and Kim for setting up the green even though they accidentally on purpose messed up the rink numbers LOL, and thank you to all who cleared up after the match.”

Alan Hesselden - “Well said Brenda, a great afternoon and certainly a lesson on skulduggery and dodgy bowling tactics, but we had lots of laughs.”

Many thanks to all of our friends who came along to watch the match and to Match Umpire Trevor Langrish, despite the fact that he seemed to miss some of the questionable goings on in the various rinks.  Trevor also didn’t appear to notice Captain Brenda tying her opposing Skip Dave H’s shoelaces together....She tied the knot very tight, so he had to find a grown up to untie the knot for him!

Well done Suzie for arranging the raffle for today's event and thank you to all our members who kindly donated prizes for the raffle which raised £155 for our club.

August 15th - We were back in action again this evening in the Friday night Adur League, playing at home against Southwick Park BC.

We won on two of the rinks and were beaten on the other two rinks and we won on the overall score so we won the match 8 - 4.

August 13th - Our ladies were beaten at home by Southwick Park in the Ladies Brighton and Hove District League this afternoon.  We lost on both rinks with a final score of 26 - 39 so the visitors collected all six points available from the match.

August 12th - This afternoon we played a friendly match against Robin's Reliants from Adur Indoor Bowling Club.  We won the match comfortably but our opponents will no doubt be thirsting for revenge when we play them indoors at Adur later in the year.

This evening, our final Brighton & Hove District Men's League fixture of the season finished with a defeat at home against Portslade and also sadly confirmed our relegation from division one.

We won on one of the three rinks but lost 32 - 50 on the overall score, so we took two points from the match.  Although regularly coming up against very tough opposition over the last three years in division one, it has provided very valuable experience to our bowlers and hopefully we can have a great season in division 2 next year and win promotion back to the top division.

August 10th - We bowled in a very exciting top of the table Brodie League match at home against our local rivals Southwick BC this afternoon. In warm and sunny weather conditions, we won on three rinks and Southwick won on the other rink.

The overall shot score was Shoreham 70 Southwick 71. This means that Shoreham won the match by 6 points to 4 points and just as we did last season, we have won our home and away Brodie fixtures this season against current Brodie League champions Southwick.
We remain top of the Brodie League, where we have been all season, with 97 points from 14 matches and Southwick are in second place with 86 points but they have played 2 matches less than us.
It was great to have Bob Page back in the team today as we have missed him over the last three months. Also, a special mention for Brenda Page who played in the next rink to me and whenever I looked across to her rink, there were usually some of her little pink bowls in the count.💕
Many thanks to all of the spectators who came along to support both clubs today and created a very good and friendly atmosphere.

August 8th - A beautiful sunny evening at Lancing BC tonight for our Adur League fixture. We won on three of the four rinks but were beaten on the other rink.

On the overall score, Lancing won by 2 shots so we took away six points and Lancing also receive six points and big thank you from us to Lancing BC for their post match hospitality.

August 7th - Our second Ladies League match of the week this morning away at Southwick.   It was a very enjoyable morning and both rinks were tight but our players Hilary, Marion & Brenda and Barbara V., Sarah & Suzie won on both rinks.

With a final shot count of 38-24 in our favour,  Shoreham receive the  maximum 6 points which Lift us off the bottom of the B&HD Ladies League table.

August 6th - We played our thirteenth Brodie League match of the season away at Marine Gardens this afternoon and registered our tenth win in the competition on a beautiful sunny day beside the seaside.
We won on two rinks and were beaten on the other two rinks and the final score was 64 - 60 in our favour so we take away six points and Marine Gardens receive four points.

August 5th - A disappointing day for us in the Ladies and Men's Brighton and Hove District Leagues.

This morning the ladies played away at The Drive which is always a challenge for us on their artificial green.  Unfortunately and unavoidably we were one player short for this match, so our Ladies Captain Marion was very grateful to her opposing captain Carol for tweaking the format slightly so both teams used the same number of bowls.  For the majority of the match it was very tight on both rinks, particularly on Jane's rink, who along with Barbara V and Sarah only lost by 4 shots.  The overall final score was 36 - 23 in favour of The Drive.

This evening the men played away against a very good Preston team.  We lost on two of the rinks but snatched a draw on the other rink thanks to an excellent final bowl shot by Skip Dave Page.

A special mention also for Roy Webb and his team.  partway through the match, Roy's rink were 14 - 3 down but they fought back to be only one shot down going into the final end.  With his final bowl of the match, Roy needed to hit the jack as his team had several bowls sitting behind the jack.  He played a great shot and made contact with the jack but very unluckily it ran to the only bowl Preston had behind the jack.

We lost the match 69 - 40 but the one point we took away from Preston still gives us a slight chance of avoiding relegation if we can achieve a maximum points win in our final match of the season at home against Portslade.

August 3rd - A very enjoyable and ultimately successful day for us today, bowling at both Southwick's and Southwick Park’s greens in the 2025 Adur Top Team competition.

Eighteen of our members played in the competition which comprised of various different formats of triples and pairs matches and a big thank you to Dave Page who picked our various teams for today’s competition

Congratulations to Barbara Velardo and Brenda Page who won the Ladies Pairs competition, and to Dave Hoggen and Kim Hudson who won the Men’s Pairs Competition. Congratulations also to Southwick BC who won the overall Adur Top Team competition.

August 2nd - We played at home in a friendly match this afternoon against Portslade BC.  The match format was five Triples and we won one of them but were beaten on the other four.

August 1st - We played at home this evening in the Adur League against our friends from Southwick BC.  It was all going well until the last few ends of the match with us ahead in three of the four rinks, but Southwick fought back well and we finished the match winning just one of the rinks.

As always, it was an enjoyable game, played in good spirit against our local rivals and we picked up two points.

JULY 2025

July 30th - The last three semi finals of our 2025 club competitions took place this afternoon and the various finals will all be played on Saturday 30th August.

Men’s Pairs - Trevor Langrish and Dave Hoggen V Ivan Parnell and Roy Webb

Nominated Mixed Pairs - Marion Hoggen and Dave Hoggen V Suzie Warley and Roy Webb

Veteran Mixed Singles - Trevor Langrish V Ivan Parnell

Mike Redford Cup - Wayne Brown V Richard Tourle

Dot Howe Cup - Jane Bowen V Ann Stainsby

Many thanks to all of our members who entered this year’s club competitions and fingers crossed for us to get nice weather on 30th August.

July 29th - Our ladies played this morning at home against Portslade in the Brighton & Hove District Ladies League.  We drew on one rink but were beaten on the other rink.  The final score was 16 - 24 so we picked up one point and Portslade received five points.

This evening, our men played away at last season's champions Hollingbury in the Brighton & Hove District Men's League.  We won on two of the rinks and were beaten on the other rink.  The final score was 42 - 47 so we picked up four points and Hollingbury received six points.

July 27th - A very enjoyable and successful morning today for our match against Jamie Dunk's Sussex Under 24s team.

We played two rinks matches, drawing 13 - 13 on one of them and going down 13 - 17 on the other rink.

Many thanks to Brenda Page and Dave Page, together with Jamie for organising the match and it was great for us to have the opportunity to watch and play against some very talented youngsters.

Thanks also to Master Chef Dave Page for the delicious bacon rolls, the sale of which raised £40 for our club.

July 26th - Sadly, this morning we bowed out of the Edward Rowland competition at the quarter final stage when David Cornwell, Kim Hudson, Dave Hoggen and Roy Webb were beaten 21 - 8 by a very strong four away at Buxted Park who included two very talented young bowlers in their team.

Encouragingly, we had a good run in this year's competition, including great wins away at Burgess Hill and Worthing Pavilion in the earlier rounds.

Thankfully our ladies are still going strong in the Gladys Rowland competition and fingers crossed , they can hopefully go on to win that tournament this year.

25th July - A great performance for our Adur League Captain Brenda Page's team at home against Lancing  this evening.

In perfect sunny and warm weather conditions, we won on three rinks and were very narrowly beaten on the fourth rink. We picked up 10 points and Lancing took 2 points.

24th July - Well done to Marion Hoggen, Bridget Pavitt, Suzie Warley  and Brenda Page who comfortably won their Gladys Rowland competition quarter final match at home against Horsham this morning.  The final score was 20 - 10.

Things didn't go well for our men this evening who were soundly beaten by Saltdean in the Bill Hawkins cup.

23rd July - Following two defeats against Tarring Priory in our last couple of Brodie matches we got back to winning ways in today's Brodie League match at home against Goring Manor BC.

We won on 2 rinks and drew on the other 2 rinks.  With a total shot count of 71 - 50, that gives us 8 points and 2 points to Goring.

The rain and thunder we could hear in the distance never materialised so we enjoyed a lovely warm day.

Well done to all who played for us today.

22nd July - A wonderful, memorable and exciting day for the ladies and men of Shoreham BC who played today in the Southwick Park Ladies Invitation Tournament and the Brighton and Hove District Mens League.

The SBC ladies put two teams into the Southwick Park ladies tournament. This was an all day competition which 16 teams from various clubs entered.  Congratulations to Marion Hoggen, Sarah Fowle, Ann Stainsby and Brenda Page who won the tournament, and to Barbara Velardo, Bridget Pavitt, Jane Bowen and Suzie Warley who finished in 3rd place. Our winners took away prize money of £30 each and our 3rd placed team took away £15 each.

The excitement for our club didn't end with the success the ladies enjoyed as in the evening, our men played at home against Southwick BC in The Brighton and Hove League and this was a must win match for us.  In a very exciting game, played in front of a good number of spectators, we won on all 3 rinks to record a marvellous 10 - Nil victory.  Congratulations to Alan Hesselden, Richard Tourle, John McMurran and Dave Page  who bowled on rink one, Trevor Langrish, David Goodman, Paul Green and Roy Webb who played on rink two and Brian Bulmer, Rod McBeth, Dave Hoggen and Kim Hudson who bowled on rink four.  Also, a big thank you to Dave Page who earlier in the day persuaded the team who look after our green to cut it a day earlier than normal and this certainly made drawing shots easier to play.

21st July - Marion Hoggen, Suzie Warley, Dave Hoggen and John McMurran played their Area 3 County mixed fours final this morning against a very strong four Horsham this morning.
Our four quickly worked out that they would have to keep the score very close to stand a realistic chance of winning. We managed to do that until the 15th end when we dropped a 4. The final score was 20 - 12 to Horsham team.

19th July - Congratulations to our Ladies Gladys Rowland team, Marion Hoggen, Bridget Pavitt, Suzie Warley and BrendaPage. This afternoon they played in the 3rd round of this year’s competition away at Uckfield Bowls Club and in a very close and exciting game, they won the match 16 - 15.

The ladies have now reached the quarter final stage of the tournament and they will play at home against Horsham BC some time in the next couple of weeks on a date still to be decided

18th July - Our first match of the season in the Adur League this evening, away at Southwick Park ended in defeat.

We won on one rink but were beaten on the other 3 rinks.  The final score of 58 - 62 was very close and we picked up 2 points from the match.

17th July - Two matches were played simultaneously this afternoon at Shoreham.

In the 3rd round of the Edward Rowland competition, David Cornwell, Kim Hudson, Dave Hoggen and Ron Wallace beat a team from The Drive by 24 - 9 and progressed to the quarter finals stage where they will play away from home against a team from Buxted Park BC.

In the Hove League, Dave Clevett`s team were beaten by a strong Portslade team who included four of their Men`s Brighton & Hove League regular bowlers.  We won on one rink and lost on the other 2 rinks.  The final score was 49 - 60 and we picked up 2 points from the match.

Many thanks to those who came along to watch the matches and to Dave Clevett who set up the green and allowed bowlers playing in the Ed Rowland match to scoff some of his Hove League match cakes.

16th July - We were back in action in the Brodie League this afternoon with us playing at home against a strong but very friendly Tarring Priory team.

We won on 2 rinks, lost on the other 2 rinks and we were beaten 74 - 65 on the overall score so Shoreham picked up 4 points and Tarring receive 6 points.

As agreed at a recent committee meeting, our Brodie captain Marion asked Tarring`s captain Steve if he would like to bring another 4 less experienced bowlers to play a friendly match against 4 of our bowlers who weren’t playing in today’s Brodie team. It was great to see one of our new bowlers Steve making his debut for Shoreham BC in this friendly match and he played alongside Hilary and Sarah who both made their Shoreham debuts earlier this season and they were Skipped by one of our wily old campaigners David Goodman.

Despite this afternoon's Brodie defeat, we still remain at the top of the league at the moment, although as the current league table below show's, current champions Southwick will now be favourites to win the league again this season.  We still have to play Southwick at home which will be a must win match for Shoreham.

Many thanks to John for setting up the green and to Suzie, Jane and Brenda for doing the teas, the bar and the raffle.  Thanks also to our friends and teammates who came along to support us in today's Brodie and friendly matches.

15th July - A very disappointing result for us this evening in the Brighton & Hove District Men's League, playing away from home on Portslade's artificial green and with us suffering our first (and hopefully last) 10 - 0 defeat of the season.

It was always going to be difficult for us playing on a plastic green but it was even tougher than we expected due to a 20mph+ windspeed as their green is wide open with no shelter.

This evening's result leaves us well adrift at the bottom of the division one league table and we will need fight hard to somehow try to avoid relegation.

13th July - A great afternoon at Southwick BC for our friendly match.  As always when we play against them,  there was friendly rivalry and a great atmosphere.

We won on three of the rinks and lost on the other one but Southwick won the match on the overall score by 64 - 60.

11th July - Another hot afternoon in the sunshine today playing in a home friendly match against our friends from Peacehaven BC. We won on 3 of the rinks, lost on the other 2 rinks and the final score was 100 - 62 to Shoreham.

Well done to everyone who played and Marion Hoggen, Ann Stainsby & Rod McBeth were our top rink, winning by 29 - 7. Judging by the laughter and smiles all around the green and in the clubhouse, clearly everyone enjoyed themselves today.

9th July - Quoting our Club Captain, Alan Hesselden: "A pleasant day of bowls at Hollingbury this afternoon. They gave us a warm welcome and some great buns with our half time tea!"

"A special mention to Mick Claridge, Mike Harding and Dave Hoggen who won 29 - 9 on their rink. Overall, we won on 2 rinks, we lost on the other 2 rinks and we won by 70 - 66 on the final score.

What a great way to spend an afternoon in the sunshine."

8th July - Tuesdays are becoming our least favourite day of the week as for the third successive Tuesday, our ladies and men were narrowly beaten in their respective Brighton & Hove District League matches.

In the afternoon the ladies travelled to Woodingdean and won on one rink but lost on the other rink. The final score was 33 - 35 so we picked up 2 points from the match.

In the evening the men played at home against Rottingdean and won on one rink but lost on the other 2 rinks.  The final score was 41 - 47 so we picked up 2 points from the match.

6th July - Marion Hoggen, Dave Hoggen and Kim Hudson played together in the West Hoathly Open Competition today. They were in with a chance of winning the tournament as they had won all their group matches but then heavy rain, thunder & lightning forced the event to be abandoned.

The organisers therefore had to use countback to calculate the final results and Marion, Dave and Kim finished 3rd out of 24 teams. They thoroughly recommend this competition to any of our members who fancy entering some Open Competitions next season.

Further information on outdoor open competitions can be found via the website menu.

5th July - We played at home this afternoon in a friendly match against Mackie and quoting Club Captain Alan, "it was a bit of a shocker"!  The score was level when we went in for tea at the break but by the end of the match we had succumbed to a 49 - 84 defeat.

Massive thanks go to Mick and Rachel for providing the teas plus homemade chocolate cake and lemon drizzle cake.....Yum Yum!

4th July - Our annual Captain’s team versus President`s team match took place on a beautiful sunny afternoon today.

Following the match, our Club President David Goodman was extremely keen for the match result to be published on our website and facebook page as quickly as possible.

Our Club Captain Alan Hesselden was less keen for the match result to be published and rumour has it that Alan was searching for a box of matches so he could burn all of the scorecards.

Our Website Manager who also looks after our facebook page, and whose name shall remain anonymous had the misfortune to be selected to bowl for the Captain`s team this afternoon so he has refused to publish yesterday`s result but suffice to say, the President’s team won.

Many thanks to those of you who came along to watch the match, well done to Suzie who raised over £100 for the club through the raffle and thanks also to all those who kindly donated raffle prizes.

2nd July - A great day out at Hangleton BC yesterday, especially for Jim Ede going back to his old club where he appears many times on their Honour Boards. A good day for Wayne Brown playing as Skip for the first time and an excellent result for David Goodman, Dave Clevett and Ron Lainchbury who won their by 14 shots.

Overall we won on 2 rinks, lost on 1...total score 54-35 for a relatively small club these days, our hosts made us very welcome.

1st July - There were two matches today in the Brighton and Hove District Leagues.

The ladies played at home against Southwick this morning and although we won on one of the two rinks, we lost  29 - 32 on the total score so we picked up 2 points.

This evening, the men played away Woodingdean who are the current league leaders.  In another close match, we won on one rink but were beaten on the other two rinks and the overall score was 47 - 54, so again we picked up 2 points from the match.

JUNE 2025

29th June - Thanks and well done to all our members who played in yesterday’s friendly match away at Rottingdean at such short notice.. We won on three of the rinks and lost on the other rink and the overall score was 66 - 60 in our favour. Our top rink was Richard Tourle, Brenda Page and Kim Hudson.

According to our esteemed club secretary Jane Bowen, the weather conditions were low cloud and sea fret which dampened the temperature….In other words, it was blooming freezing!

25th June - A great afternoon of bowls today with our friends from Hurstpierpoint BC and what a friendly bunch they are. Although we lost 95-65, everyone was a winner on a lovely sunny day.

Many thanks to Dave Clevett for providing some splendid cakes for everyone on a wonderful afternoon of bowls and laughs and thanks also to Jenny, Bob and Dave for making the teas.

24th June - Following on from the outstanding result Marion Hoggen, Bridget Pavitt, Brenda Page and Suzie Warley had yesterday in the Gladys Rowland competition, this evening David Cornwell, Kim Hudson, Dave Hoggen and Ron Wallace played away and won their second round fixture of the Ed Rowland competition against a strong Worthing Pavilion team.

Our ladies and men’s teams will both play in the last 16 of their respective competitions next month.

23rd June - A great comeback and result for our ladies who played away at Southwick Park this morning in the second round of the Gladys Rowland competition.
They were 7 - 18 down with seven ends left to play and fought back to win the match 21 - 18.  Congratulations to Marion Hoggen, Bridget Pavitt, Brenda Page and Suzie Warley.

21st June - Well played everyone this afternoon in our friendly match away at Brighton BC who now play their home matches at Preston. On a very hot and sticky afternoon we won convincingly by 91 - 46. A special mention for two of our new bowlers, Hilary Leggett and Sarah Fowle who both bowled very well.

Dave Goodman, Hilary Leggett and Mike Watts were our top rink winning by 17 shots and we won on all 4 rinks.

Over the last couple of days, we also had two teams playing in the County Mixed Fours Competition against two teams from The Drive BC.  Yesterday Marion Hoggen, Suzie Warley, Dave Hoggen and John McMurran won 18 - 12 at home and today, Barbara Velardo, Brian Bulmer, Brenda Page and Dave Page won 17 - 9 away at The Drive. Our two teams will play against each other in the next round of the competition next month.

19th June - Following on from a very successful run of results in the first half of this season's Brodie League fixtures, we came crashing back down to earth this afternoon in our Brodie match away at Tarring Priory.

In uncomfortably hot weather conditions we struggled to come to terms with their green which had several very large brown patches on it. All credit however to our opponents who played well and certainly made their home advantage count.

We were beaten on three of the rinks and drew on the other rink, the total score was 57 - 77 so we picked up just one point today. Apparently our star bowlers this afternoon were Brenda Page and Barbara Velardo who played in the drawn rink. Coincidently, Brenda was the source of this information but it has not yet been verified!

The highlight of the day was Shoreham Bowling Club's Three Wise Monkeys, Roy Webb, Kim Hudson and Dave Page performing their routine prior to the match.  If you would like to purchase a statuette of these Three Wise Monkeys for your garden, please don't call us!

17th June - A disappointing Tuesday for us in the ladies and the mens Brighton & Hove District Leagues.

In the afternoon the ladies played away at Southwick Park and were beaten on both rinks.  The final score was 28 - 38.

In the evening the men played at home against Preston and although we won on one of the rinks, we lost on the other two rinks.  The final score was 38 - 46 and we picked up 2 points from the match.

16th June - Another day, another Brodie League match! They have been coming thick and fast in the seven and a half weeks since the start of the outdoor season.

This afternoon we played our 9th Brodie fixture of the season and we were away at Lancing BC. We had another great result, winning on three rinks and losing on the other rink.

The total score was Shoreham 78 Lancing 57, so we picked up eight of the ten points available from the match.

Many thanks to Roy Spencer, Jenny Hughes and Bob Page who are unable to bowl at the moment but came along to Lancing to support us today.

14th June - We played our eighth Brodie League match of the season on a sunny and breezy afternoon today.

We were at home against Steyning BC and kept up our good start in this league with our seventh win in the eight matches we have played so far.

We won on three of the rinks and narrowly lost on the fourth rink. The total score was 64 - 50 in our favour, so 8 points go to Shoreham and 2 points to Steyning.

12th June - In lovely warm and sunny conditions this afternoon we played an enjoyable friendly match away at Southwick Park BC.

We won on three of the four rinks and lost by just one shot on the other rink. The final score was 77 - 54 in our favour.

As the score suggests, there were lots of good performances in our team today and one of the best performances was that of Mo Barnes. Mo struggled to reach the distances required in the first part of the match but she kept fighting, didn't let her head go down and by the end of the game Mo had played several great shots.

10th June - A busy Tuesday at the club with home matches in both the Ladies Brighton & Hove District League and the Mens Brighton & Hove District League.

The ladies played in the morning against The Drive and had a convincing victory, winning on both rinks with a total score of 53 - 23.

Unfortunately things didn't go as well for the men playing against Hollingbury in the evening.  On two of the rinks we made bad starts and although we improved significantly during the games, it wasn't quite enough to go on and win the match.

We won on one of the three rinks and lost by just two shots on the overall score which was 55 - 57.

9th June - An exciting match in the Hove League today in our away match against Preston.  We won on two of the three rinks but we lost by just one shot on the overall score and therefore we picked up 4 points and Preston received 6 points.  After the match finished, we drowned our sorrows with nice cakes and tea and we thank Preston BC for their hospitality.

8th June - The annual Woodingdean Invitational Tournament took place today with 24 teams from various clubs competing in a rinks format.

Shoreham have had a fair amount of success in this tournament in the last few years including Jenny Hughes, Brenda Page, Dave Page and Bob Page winning the competition 3 years ago and Marion Hoggen, Suzie Warley, Paul Green and Dave Hoggen winning it 2 years ago.

Today Marion, Suzie, Paul and Dave H won three of their four qualifying matches to reach the 3rd/4th place final which they also won against Betty Petit, Sue Willard, Steve Herbert and Kevin Yeo who all bowl at Southwick BC.

Congratulations to our good friends Jan and Geoff Bibby from Southwick and Maria and David Sanders from The Drive who won today's competition, and to Betty, Sue, Steve and Kevin who finished in fourth place.

7th June - Last year our ladies finished as runners up in the Gladys Rowland competition and this afternoon they made a good start to this year's competition.

We played at home against Worthing Pavilion BC and won the match 18 - 12.  Well done to Marion Hoggen, Bridget Pavitt, Ann Stainsby and Suzie Warley who played today.

6th June - Another great result for Shoreham playing at home against Worthing Pavilion BC this afternoon in  the Brodie League.

We won on three of the four rinks and only went down by one shot on our losing rink. The total score was 79 - 42 in our favour so Shoreham picked up eight of the ten points available and of the seven Brodie matches we have played so far this season, we have won six and lost only one match.

3rd June - There were two matches for us today in the Brighton & Hove District Leagues.

This morning the ladies played away at Portslade BC in very difficult conditions with 40 MPH winds and heavy rain and we were beaten on both rinks.

This evening in much better weather conditions, the men played away at Southwick BC and had a great result.  We won by 10 shots on one rink, drew on one rink and lost by only 4 shots on the other rink.  The overall score was 51 - 45 in our favour so 7 points to Shoreham, 3 points to Southwick and our first win of the season in the Men's league.

1st JuneOur second Hove League match of the season was played this afternoon on a sunny but very blustery day away at Portslade BC.  The combination of their artificial green and the gusty wind made conditions quite difficult with bowls regularly being blown off their line and although we lost the match we won on 1 of the 3 rinks played.

MAY 2025

31st MayA great afternoon in our friendly match at home against Hangleton BC.  The match format today was 3 Triples and we won on all 3 rinks with a total overall score of 57 - 29.

May 30th - A cloudy start turned out to be a beautiful day today for our annual Robin Hood tournament in which our members are split into teams of 2 and aim their bowls from all 4 corners of the green to a target in the centre of the green.

Congratulations to today's winners Suzie Warley and Wayne Brown and to runners up Jane Bowen and Brian Bulmer. Congratulations also to Brian who finished the day as the individual top scorer.

Huge thanks to John McMurran, Ivan Parnell and Bob Page for running the tournament and to Master Barbecue Chef Dave Page and Barmaid Extraordinaire Brenda Page for keeping us all well fed and watered!

May 29th - On an overcast and chilly afternoon today we played a friendly match at home against Southwick Park BC.  The match format was four triples and we won on all 4 rinks with a final score of 81 - 43.

Congratulations to Hilary Leggett and Sarah Fowle who both made their Shoreham BC match debuts today in a winning team.

May 28thA busy day for Shoreham with three matches being played.  In the afternoon we were beaten 38 - 53 in a friendly match away against Mackie and in the evening we had 2 teams playing in the first round of the 2025 Ed Rowland competion.  Alan Hesselden, David Goodman, John McMurran and Dave Page played at home against West Hoathly and won 22 - 17 and David Cornwell, Kim Hudson, Dave Hoggen and Ron Wallace played away at Burgess Hill and won 23 - 12.

26th May - We played our first match of the season in the Brighton & Hove District Ladies League this morning at home against Rottingdean BC.

This league consists of 7 local clubs including Shoreham and the teams play against each other at home and away in a Triples format, so 12 fixtures each over the course of the season. Shoreham joined the league for the first time last season and finished as champions.

In yesterday's match, we won on 1 rink and lost on the other rink and Rottingdean won on the overall score, so they received 4 points and we receive 2 points.

25th May - Over the the last few days, we have had a very heavy schedule at Shoreham BC with 3 Brodie League matches in the last 4 days and in addition to this, over the same period some of our members have had to play in various club and county competitions.

Despite the heavy schedule we won 6 - 4 away at current champions Southwick BC this afternoon in the Brodie where we won 2 of the rinks, went down on the 2 other rinks and we won on the overall score by 74 - 58 .

This is a really good achievement for Shoreham, particularly as 22 of our members played in at least 1 of the last 3 Brodie matches, so it shows that we have good strength in depth.

Well done Shoreham BC and let's hope we can keep this good run of form going.

24th May - Another cracking performance and result for Shoreham BC playing away at Steyning BC this afternoon in the Brodie League.

A few weeks ago, we achieved our first ever 10 - 0 win away at Goring Manor BC since joining the Brodie League last season

Today we won 10 - 0 (69 - 50) at Steyning which was our third 10 - 0 victory in our last four Brodie matches.

Congratulations to all who put their names down for the match and to those who played today and many thanks to Paul Whiskin for coming along to support our team.

22nd May - We played in our fourth Brodie League match of the season today at home against Worthing BC and continued our good start to the season with another great performance to win the match by 10 - 0 (102 - 34).  We are currently riding high at the top of the Brodie league although our next 2 fixtures will be tough, away at Brodie newcomers Steyning followed by an away match at current champions Southwick.

20th May - A very enjoyable evening in our second Brighton & Hove District League match away at Rottingdean BC.  On by far the heaviest green we have played so far this season, we won on 2 of the 3 rinks but went down by 48 - 58 on the overall score so we came away with 4 points from the match.  Huge thanks go to Brenda and Marion who came along to support us and to Rottingdean BC for laying on a lovely spread for us after the match.

17th May - Playing away against a strong Worthing Pavilion team we had our first Brodie League defeat of the season but we won on 2 of the 4 rinks played.

In one of the Triples rinks, David Goodman who played with Richard Pavitt and Mike Harding turned one end from being 7 down into 1 up and they went on to win on their rink

In the other Triples rink there was great comeback where John McMurran, David Cornwell and Dave Hoggen were 8 shots down with three ends to go.  They picked up 3 shots on the 16th end, another 3 on the 17th end and 4 shots on the final end to win their rink by 2 shots.

Overall we lost the match 68-57 (6 points to Pavilion and 4 to Shoreham) so still a very good day for Shoreham BC.  Very well done to all who played and a big thank you to Dave Page, Brenda Page and Barbara Velardo who came to Worthing to watch the match.

15th MayA busy week for SBC with our 3rd fixture in 3 days!  We played in the Hove League at home against Preston BC.  We lost the match 1 - 2 (46 - 66) but our Hove League Captain Dave Clevett said we played very well.

14th May - A great win in our friendly at home against Henfield BCWe won on all 4 rinks with a score of 91 - 55.  Well done Captain Alan and all who played

13th MayA difficult opening fixture for us in the Brighton & Hove District Mens League as we played at home to Woodingdean who must be one of the favourites to win the league this season.  We lost the match 37 - 57 (2 - 8) but we won on 1 of the 3 rinks played.

9th May -  Bowls Bash:

Today we had an event organised with the Adur District Council Groundsmen and Sports Team. This was an opportunity for us to meet, and thank, those who work so hard to maintain our green and surrounds.

On a beautiful afternoon, we  played a match in the Bowls Bash format against the council and we also enjoyed a drink with them at the end of the game.

7th May - Another excellent result today in the Brodie league away at Goring Manor BC.  We won 10 - 0 (92 - 42) and for the first time since we joined the Brodie league last season, we picked up the maximum 10 points available from the fixture.

APRIL 2025

26th/27th April - A team including Dave Hoggen which in the earlier rounds also included Bob Page finished as runners up in the 24/25 Adur IBC Mens Triples Competition. Halfway through the final they were 16 - 2 behind but then fought their way back into the match and in the end only lost by 2 shots with the final score being 19 - 17.

The following day, Suzie Warley and Marion Hoggen played together and were runners up in the Ladies Nominated Pairs final. In a very close match they did very well to be in the lead against a very experienced pair but just fell behind in the last few ends of the game.

25th April - A great result in our first Brodie League match of the season, winning 8 - 2 (73 - 63) at home against Marine Gardens.

18th April - Adur Indoor Easter Fours Competition - On Good Friday, two Shoreham BC teams entered this competition.  Dave Page, Brenda Page, Malcolm Merrell and Suzie Warley made up one team and the other team was Marion Hoggen, Ann Stainsby, Mike Harding and Dave Hoggen.  Well done to both teams who each won 2 of their group matches.

11th April - Congratulations to Ian Stainsby who won our Most Improved Indoor Bowler Of The Season award for 24/25. Unfortunately he was unable to play in our final match of the season so the trophy was presented by our Indoor Captain Marion to Ian's wife Ann on his behalf.

MARCH 2025

27th/28th March - Congratulations to Suzie Warley and Marion Hoggen for reaching the final of the Adur Indoor Ladies Nominated Pairs Competition and to Bob Page and Dave Hoggen who along with Trevor Smith reached the final of the Adur Mens Triples Competion. As we are primarily an outdoor club, this is a good achievement. Unfortunately Bob was unable to play in the semi final and may not be able to play in the final but if not, he certainly played a major part by playing well in the earlier rounds.

Our green and clubhouse looking beautiful prior to the 2025 season

FEBRUARY 2025

8th February - Four teams from Shoreham BC entered the Adur IBC tournament for outdoor clubs in February.  32 teams from various local clubs entered the competition and Marion Hoggen, Paul Green, Suzie Warley and Dave Hoggen won all 5 of their matches and picked up prize money of  £150 for finishing in 3rd place.
