This evening, our men played in the Brighton and Hove District League away from home on the artificial green at The Drive BC.  Playing there is always a difficult task as we are used to playing on grass but we managed to win on one of the three rinks in our 8 - 2 defeat.

Bowling in our winning rink were David Cornwell, Brian Bulmer, Dave Hoggen and Skip Kim Hudson

July 6th - Well done to our two teams of men who played in the Bill Hawkins competition this evening against Mackie BC.  Bowling in the home leg were Alan Heselden, Wayne Brown, John McMurran and Skip Dave Page.  Bowling away at Mackie were David Cornwell, Dave Hoggen, Bob Page and Skip Phil Hillsden.  We won the match 42 - 32 and will play home and away legs against Portslade BC in the next round.

June 30th - A great performance by our men this evening in the Brighton & Hove District League.  We played at home against the league leaders Saltdean BC and won on two rinks and drew on the other rink to register a 9 - 1 victory.

June 29th -

It was a very close and exciting match, won by Marion and Brenda won so they now move on to play another pair of ladies from Arundel, at Preston BC in the County Semi-Final on Sunday 19th July.

June 27th - An enjoyable afternoon today in our friendly match away at Rottingdean, despite a heavy shower in the middle of the match!  We were beaten 60 - 53 and bowling in our top rink were Barbara Velardo, Brian Bulmer and Skip Mike Watts.

June 25th - Our latest report in today's edition of the Worthing Herald

June 23rd -

On a swelteringly hot evening, we played away at Mackie in the Brighton & Hove District League.  We were beaten 8 - 2 and bowling in our sole winning rink were Bob Page, Ivan Parnell, Rod McBeth and Skip Phil Hillsden.  We had a chance to reduce our margin of defeat to 6 - 4 with David Cornwell, Brian Bulmer, Dave Hoggen and Skip Kim Hudson, one shot ahead going into the last end but unluckily they dropped two shots on the final end.

In the photo above, our regular travelling supporters club members, Marion Hoggen and Brenda Page were giving Phil Hillsden some advice on his bowling technique until they spotted someone with a camera and in the photo below, Dave Hoggen is doing his Milky Bar Kid impersonation!

June 22nd -

As we moved into the second heatwave of this summer, several of our hardy and enthusiastic bowlers still came along to our Monday afternoon Roll Up today!

June 20th - A great win for Shoreham bowlers at Worthing Paviliion this morning in the National Two Fours competition. Today's victory puts our team into the National Area Final against a team from Burgess Hill, to be played on a neutral ground in July. Bowling for Shoreham were; Marion Hoggen, Brenda Page, Dave Hoggen and Skip Dave Page; Barbara Velardo, Suzie Warley, Bob Page and Skip Phil Hillsden.

This afternoon we played a friendly match away to Brighton BC. Although we were beaten 58 - 47, everyone played their part in making it a pleasant afternoon of bowling. Well done to Ken Jameson who made his debut for Shoreham and to Steve Fuller who is another new bowler. Our top rink was David Goodman, Ken Jameson and Jim Ede

June 18th - On a wet afternoon, Shoreham were beaten 8 - 2 in a Brodie League match away at Tarring Priory BC. Bowling in our winning rink were, David Cornwell and Skip, Roy Webb.

On the same afternoon, in the Sussex County Mixed Fours competition at Southwater, Marion Hoggen, Brenda Page, Dave Hoggen and Skip, Dave Page were level at 14 - 14 with one end left to play. unfortunately they were they were beaten on the final end of a great and close match, played on an excellent green.

June 18th  - From this morning's Worthing Herald;

June 17th - We were beaten 9 - 1 today in the Hove League away at Woodingdean BC but there was great excitement for us on one of the rinks where Ann Stainsby, Richard Tourle, Alan Heselden and Mick Claridge were bowling. On the sixteenth end, they were down by 1 shot, on the seventeenth end, Woodingdean were holding 7 shots until Ann Stainsby bowled her last wood and took the shot making it 16 to Shoreham, 17 to Woodingdean. On the final end, Ann got shot wood again to make the final score in their rink 17 - 17 which earned us our one point from the match. Well done SuperAnn!

Unfortunately, Shoreham's other Edward Rowland competition team, Brian Bulmer, Bob Page, Dave Page and Kim Hudson were beaten by Portslade.

June 16th - Congratulations to Brenda Page and Marion Hoggen who beat a pair from Southwick today in the third round of the County Ladies Pairs competition.

Sadly, things didn't go so well for David Cornwell, Wayne Brown, Dave Hoggen and Phil Hillsden in the second round of the Edward Rowland competition as they were well beaten by a team from Woodingdean.

On a positive note for our men, today was our rest day in the Brighton & Hove District League and the other clubs results went well for us, so we are second in the league table on shots difference with all clubs having played six matches each.

June 15th - Another good start to a new week for Shoreham BC today.  We played away against Lancing BC this afternoon in the Brodie League and won on two rinks, drew on another rink and were beaten on the other rink. Shoreham won the match 7 - 3, so in our first eight Brodie fixtures this season, we have now won seven matches and have been beaten only once.

Bowling in our winning rinks were Suzie Warley and Skip, Roy Webb in the Pairs who came back from being 12 - 0 down after two ends to win their match and in one of the Triples, David Cornwell, Brian Bulmer and Skip, Phil Hillsden had a very comfortable win.

Bowling in our tied rink were Bob Page, Mike Harding and Skip, Dave Hoggen who came back from 8 - 0 down and then 15 - 7 down to draw 21 - 21.

Many thanks to our friends from Lancing BC for their hospitality. They are a very nice club and they certainly deserve to have more members.

June 13th - This afternoon in beautiful sunshine, we played at home against Steyning BC in the Brodie League. We won on three rinks, were beaten on the other rink and the final score was 8 - 2 in Shoreham's favour. This was our seventh Brodie fixture of the season so far and we have won six of them. Bowling in our winning rinks today were:

Suzie Warley & Skip, Dave Page in the Pairs;

Barbara Velardo, Brian Bulmer & Skip, Dave Hoggen in the Triples;

David Cornwell, Mike Watts, Bob Page & Skip, Phil Hillsden in the Fours.

June 12th - This afternoon, we played a friendly match in very difficult windy conditions on the seafront at Hove and Kingsway BC.  We won the match by 62 - 56 and bowling in our  top rink today were Sarah Fowle, Dave Clevett & Skip, David Goodman.

June 11th - Following a good run in the Sussex County Men's Pairs competition, including a win away at a very windy Hove & Kingsway BC and an epic, extra end, nail biting victory at home against Popes Mead BC, Dave Hoggen and Skip Dave Page were beaten 16 - 7 this evening away at Popes Mead by a very strong pair.  The match was much closer than the score suggests because over the last few ends, the two Daves were often holding a few shots which were taken out by their opponent's Skip.

June 11th - This morning's Worthing Herald:

June 9th - A great performance and result for us this evening in the Brighton & Hove District League, playing away from home at Crouch BC in Seaford.  The match was very close with us winning on one rink, drawing on another rink and losing by just one shot on the other rink.  On the drawn rink, David Cornwell, Brian Bulmer, Dave Hoggen and Skip Kim Hudson, came back from 14 - 5 down to draw 18 - 18.  Bowling in our winning rink were Alan Heselden, Mike Watts, John McMurran and Skip Dave Page.  We won the match 7 - 3 which currently puts Shoreham top of this league, albeit the other clubs have a game in hand on us.

June 8th - After playing in our successful National Double Fours competition match this morning, the two Daves, Page and Hoggen played at home against a pair from Popes Mead BC in the second round of the Men's County Pairs competition this evening. The match was pretty close but big Dave and little Dave dropped a few shots on the 16th and 17th end which left them 16 - 11 down going into the final end.

On the 18th end, Dave Hoggen played 2 shots to the end of the green and then took the Jack back towards his bowls so the two Daves were holding 3 shots. Dave Page then played 2 great shots to make it a 5 and this meant the match went to an extra end.

Dave Hoggen was holding 4 shots on the extra end and then Dave Page hit and went with the jack so our two Daves won the match by 17 - 16. They were both ecstatic with their win until they realised that they now have to play in the 3rd round of the competition this Thursday evening away against another pair from Popes Mead BC!😁

June 8th - A good win for us on a horrible wet morning today in the quarter final of the National Over 60s two fours competition. We played against Norfolk BC from Littlehampton and bowling in our two rinks were:

Marion Hoggen, Brenda Page, Dave Hoggen & Skip Dave Page;
Barbara Velardo, Suzie Warley, Bob Page & Skip Phil Hillsden.

The scores from the two rinks are added together and we won the match 29 - 22 and will play away at Worthing Pavilion in the next round.

June 7th - Our second Brodie League win in three days. This afternoon we played at home against last season's Brodie champions Southwick. Both clubs won on two rinks each but based on the overall scores, Shoreham won the match 6 - 4 to round off a great week for their club.

Bowling on Shoreham's winning rinks were Ivan Parnell and Skip, Bob Page in the Pairs and Marion Hoggen, Suzie Warley, John McMurran and Skip, Kim Hudson in the Fours.

June 6th - This morning in wet and windy weather conditions, Marion Hoggen and Skip, Brenda Page convincingly beat a pair from Southwater BC in the second round of the Sussex County Unbadged Pairs competition.  Well done ladies.

June 5th - Following last Sunday's disappointing Brodie defeat at home against Worthing BC, we had a much better result this league today with an 8 - 2 win at home to Worthing Pavilion BC.

Bowling in Shoreham's winning rinks were, Marion Hoggen and Skip, Bob Page in the Pairs; Barbara Velardo, Suzie Warley and Skip Kim Hudson in one of the Triples and David Cornwell, David Goodman, Brian Bulmer and Skip Phil Hillsden in the Fours.

This afternoon's result means we are currently top of the Brodie League with four wins from five matches played although there are still a lot of matches still to be played and other clubs have got games in hand on us.

June 4th - From this morning's Worthing Herald;

June 2nd - Following on from our ladies success this morning, our men played at home against Lancing BC this evening in the Brighton & Hove District League.  The match was a bit of a mixed bag with us winning on one rink, drawing on another rink and losing on the other rink.  Thankfully, David Cornwell, Wayne Brown, Dave Hoggen and Skip, Kim Hudson won 26 - 7 on their rink so we won the match 7 - 3, which was our third win of the season so far in the Brighton League.

June 2nd - This morning, Shoreham B Ladies Team played at home against Buxted Park in the second round of the Gladys Rowland Ladies Fours competition which was won by Shoreham BC last season.  We made a great start to the match and were ten - nil ahead but then the Buxted Park ladies, having got used to our green fought back well, so apparently our ladies made some tactical tweaks and went on to win the match 22 - 14.

A great result for our team, Barbara Velardo, Hilary Leggett, Jane Bowen and Skip Suzie Warley and they will be playing away from home in the third round of the competition.

MAY 2026

May 31stA disappointing result for us this afternoon in the Brodie League at home against Worthing BC.  We had made a great start to the season in this league, winning our first three matches, all of which were played away from home but we were convincingly beaten 8 - 2 by our visitors today.

Bowling in our only winning rink were Malcolm Beer, David Cornwell, Brenda Page and Phil Hillsden.

May 30th - An enjoyable afternoon of bowls at home in a friendly match against Hangleton BC. We lost on two rinks, won on one rink and we won on the overall score by 46 - 43.  Bowling in our winning rink today were Alan Heselden, Brian Bulmer and Skip, Mike Watts.

May 29th

We did ourselves proud today at Shoreham-by-Sea Bowling Club. We ran our first member's only competition of 2026, the 'Robin Hood', the first of two identical events. The second the 'Friar Tuck' is played towards the end of the season.

Both competitions involve a target, similar to an archery target, painted at the centre of the green. Members are drawn into pairs and the idea is for each player to bowl from all four corners of the green and score as many points as possible!! The pair with the highest score wins.
Today we had 12 sets of pairs competing with Wayne Brown and Dave Clevett winning overall with a score of 840 in the final 👏 The runner-ups were Ivan Parnell and Brian Bulmar with 820 points.SO close! 😀

Thank you to everyone who took part with a special mention for John McMurran and Bob Page for running the event and Malcolm Beer, Hilary Legett, Ian Stainsby and Suzie Warley who supplied the refreshments.
We are always looking for new members. Please contact Jane Bowen on 07505 838848 for further information

May 26th - The current heatwave continued and we played in steaming hot conditions at Peacehaven in the Brighton & Hove District league.

As the match was drawing to a close, it looked like we were going to be beaten by a score of 8 - 2 until Dave Page played a brilliant shot with his last bowl of the match which meant the final score was Peacehaven 6 - Shoreham 4.  Bowling in our winning rink were Alan Hesselden, Ivan Parnell, John McMurran and Dave Page.

Many thanks to Peacehaven BC for their kind hospitality at the end of the match and thanks as always to our supporters, Marion Hoggen and Brenda Page who were basking or possibly baking in the hot evening sunshine!

May 23rd - We played away from home against Steyning BC in the Brodie League on a hot and sunny afternoon today. Shoreham won the match 6 - 4 which means we have won all three of their matches played so far in this league and which were all played away from home, so a good achievement for the club.

Bowling in Shoreham's winning rinks at Steyning were, Suzie Warley and Roy Webb in the Pairs match and David Cornwell, Steve Harris, Brian Bulmer and Skip Kim Hudson in the Fours match.

May 22nd

In beautiful warm sunshine today, we played a match across six rinks against Dave Page's Sussex County Bowls Area 3 VPs (Vice Patrons) team.

The match was played in great spirit and friendship and we certainly managed to make the VPs sweat a bit during what turned out to be a very close game. The final score was Shoreham 89 The VPs 96 and it provided great experience for both teams, with the VPs warming up for their upcoming Billingham League and Pullen Cup matches and Shoreham bowlers having the opportunity to play against some very good bowlers in Dave's VPs team.

Bowling in our top rink today were Jane Bowen, Edgar Powell, Ivan Parnell and Skip, John McMurran and a big thank you to everybody who played in both teams today for helping to make the match and the post match drinks such a very enjoyable experience.

Shoreham put in a great performance winning on two rinks, drawing on one rink and Pavilion won narrowly on the other rink. The final score was Worthing Pavilion 3 Shoreham 7 which gives us two wins from our opening two matches in the Brodie this season.  Bowling in our winning rinks today were:

May 13th - We played a friendly match this afternoon away at Henfield Bowling Club in very mixed weather conditions which included heavy rain, thunder and lightning, hailstones and at times bright sunshine! It was nice to have two new members, Steve Fuller and Rob Murkin making their Shoreham BC debuts in the match but the plastic green made it a very tough place for them and the rest of our team to play as we are all still reacclimatising ourselves to playing on grass.  Well played to The Drive's bowlers and thank you as always for your outstanding hospitality.

May 6th - Following on from great results in our first Hove League and our first Brighton & Hove District League fixtures, we made a successful start in the Brodie League away at Goring Manor this afternoon playing away at Goring Manor BC.  We won on all four rinks to register a 10 - Nil victory.

Marion and Suzie made a great start in today's final against another pair from Eastbourne and after the first few ends they were 8 - 0 up.  Credit to the Eastbourne pair who fought back well and the score was 12 - 11 after 12 ends.  Thankfully, our ladies didn't panic and scored a 5 on the next end to re-establish a healthy 6 shot lead. Rink 4 Hilary Leggett, Jim Ede, Wayne Brown and Skip Dave Hoggen

Rink 5 - Steve Harris, Anne Witney, Bob Page and Skip John McMurran

During the half time tea break, our Indoor Bowling Captain Marion Hoggen announced the winner of the 2025/26 SBC Most Improved Indoor Bowler award and warm congratulations to Hilary Leggett who deservedly won this award. Unfortunately, last year's winner, Ian Stainsby hasn't returned the trophy yet so the nearest thing to silverware that Marion could find to temporarily present to Hilary was an Adur IBC teapot!

NOTE TO IAN...Assuming you haven't melted down the trophy, please can you pass it on to Hilary!

NOTE TO HILARY...Please can you return the teapot to Adur IBC before they notice it is missing!

March 6th - Last Friday we played in a very exciting match at Adur IBC against Southwick BC which we won by just one shot. This afternoon's match against our good friends from The Drive BC at Adur was just as exciting and even closer!

When we stopped for tea after ten ends, Shoreham were trailing by a score of 20 - 34 but we fought back very well in the second half and the final score was a 58 - 58 draw.

Both teams won two of the four rinks played and bowling in our winning rinks were: -

Rink 5 - Marion Hoggen, Geoff Clifford, Brian Bulmer and Skip Roy Webb.

Rink 6 - Barbara Velardo, Andy Powell, John McMurran and Skip Dave Hoggen.

March 4th - This afternoon we played in our last away match of the indoor season against our friends at Worthing IBC. It can be a very tricky green to play on as it is much faster and also a bit longer and narrower  than Adur IBC.

Unfortunately, we lost on all 4 rinks with a final score of 39-88. Thanks and well done to all who played, and also to Worthing IBC for their wonderful hospitality and for lending us two of their bowlers.

FEBRUARY 2026

February 27th - We played another Indoor friendly against Southwick BC this afternoon and there was a very exciting finish to the match.

We held a good lead halfway through the game at the tea break but huge credit to Southwick who fought back to level the overall score near the end of the second half. We then managed to take the lead again and went on to win the match by the narrowest of margins, 55 - 54.

We also came out on top on three of the four rinks today and bowling in our winning rinks were:

Rink 2 - Malcolm Beer, Ron Lainchbury, Ann Stainsby & Skip Roy Webb.

Rink 3 - Barbara Velardo, Mo Barnes, Trevor Langrish & Skip Suzie Warley.

Rink 4 - Ian Stainsby, Hilary Leggett, Brian Bulmer & Skip Dave Hoggen.

February 25th - Today we played our third away match of the indoor season at Preston IBC against Mackie. Having beaten them at home a few weeks ago, they were able to level it at 1-1. We won on two rinks and lost on two but lost overall with a score of 64-72. Bowling in our winning rinks were:

Dave Cornwell, Ann Stainsby, Brian Bulmer & Skip Roy Webb

Marion Hoggen, Jim Ede, Bob Page & Skip Phil Hillsden.

February 20th - Another enjoyable afternoon today at Adur IBC, meeting up with our old friends from Brighton BC.

We won on three of the four rinks played and we came out on top on the overall score by 69 - 62 which gave us our 6th successive victory over the last few weeks.

Well done everybody who played in today's match and our top rink was Ian Stainsby, Edgar Powell, Trevor Langrish and Skip Suzie Warley.

February 13th - We were back at Adur Indoor Bowling Club this afternoon for what we think may be Shoreham BC's first ever indoor friendly match against Hollingbury BC.

We won on all four rinks and by an overall score of 96 - 34 and this was our 5th win in a row and our 10th win in the 17 indoor fixtures we have played so far this winter.

To be fair to our opponents, we had a lot more experienced indoor bowlers playing in our team than they had in their team, so the score doesn't really matter and the best thing about the match is that everyone playing today seemed to enjoy themselves.

Bowling in our rinks for Shoreham today were:

Rink 1 - Ian Stainsby, Mo Barnes, Suzie Warley & Skip Roy Webb.

Rink 2 - Alan Hesselden, Mike Harding, Mike Watts & Skip David Goodman.

Rink 3 - Barbara Velardo, Andy Powell, Brenda Page & Skip Dave Page.

Rink 4 - Marion Hoggen, Ron Lainchbury, Ann Stainsby & Skip Dave Hoggen.

February 6th - Another afternoon of fun and bowling today at Adur IBC and up against our very good friends from Southwick Park BC.

Another great result for Shoreham as well with us winning on all four rinks and by an overall score of 87 - 37 and this was our fourth victory in a row.  Bowling in our rinks today were:

Marion Hoggen, David Bowden, Bob Page & Skip Roy Webb.

Jenny Hughes, Trevor Langrish, John McMurran & Skip Phil Hillsden.

David Cornwell, Ann Stainsby, Brian Bulmer & Skip Dave Hoggen.

Ian Stainsby, Anne Witney, Mike Harding & Skip David Goodman.

JANUARY 2026

January 30th - We played in a very friendly match today against Robin's Reliants who are made up of predominantly all year round Adur indoor bowlers.

We won overall by 65 to 47 but credit also to the Reliants who won on 2 rinks and drew on 1. We won by a big score on the other rink to win the match and bowling in our winning rink were:

Ian Stainsby, Steve Harris, Brian Bulmer and Skip Ann Stainsby.

January 23rd - A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon today playing against our good friends from Southwick BC at AdurIBC.  It all went very well for us on the green with Shoreham winning on all four of the rinks played and by an overall score of 75 - 45.

This was our seventh victory in fourteen matches played so far this winter and bowling in our rinks today were:

Hilary Leggett, Andy Powell, Marion Hoggen and Skipp Dave Hoggen.

Barbara Velardo, Trevor Langrish, Suzie Warley and Skip David Goodman.

Mike Watts, Alan Hesselden, Ann Stainsby and Skip Roy Webb.

Ian Stainsby, Dave Clevett, Brenda Page and Skip Dave Page.

January 16th - Following on from two defeats in our first two fixtures of 2026, it felt good to pick up our first victory of the new year this afternoon. We played against Mackie BC at Adur, we won the match 66 - 59 and we also won on three of the four rinks played today.

Bowling in our winning rinks were:

Jenny Hughes, Sarah Fowle, Bob Page and Skip Dave Hoggen.

Marion Hoggen, Geoff Clifford/Hilary Leggett, Brian Bulmer and Skip David Goodman.

Barbara Velardo, Steve Harris, Ivan Parnell and Skip Roy Webb....A special mention for Roy and his team who came back from being 12 - 1 down to win their rink 14 - 13.

January 9th - Our most difficult Indoor fixtures of the winter season tend to be our matches with Roger Provost's Adur team because the majority of their bowlers play indoors throughout the year.

We bowled against Adur this afternoon and were beaten 53 - 84. We won on one of the four rinks played today and bowling in our winning rink were:

Barbara Velardo, David Bowden, Mike Watts and Skip David Goodman.

January 2nd - We played our first match since 12th December this afternoon at Adur IBC and it's probably fair to say that most of us were a bit rusty! Our opponents were Worthing Pavilion BC and they won the match with the final score being 54 - 64. Congratulations to Pavilion who also won on three of the four rinks we played.

Bowling in our winning rink today were:
Ian Stainsby, Ivan Parnell, Brian Bulmer and Skip Phil Hillsden.
